When Should You Be Concerned About Dense Breast Tissue? Here’s What You Need to Know

Dense breast tissue is common and it isn’t inherently abnormal. But, it’s important to understand when it may be a cause for concern.

Breast tissue is considered “dense” when there’s more fibrous or glandular tissue compared to fatty tissue. This can only be detected on a mammogram.

Four in ten women aged 40 or older have dense breasts. The condition is also more common in those with lower body fat and those undergoing hormone therapy.

So when should you be concerned about dense breast tissue? There are two main concerns.

First, it can make it harder to detect cancer on a mammogram. This is because both appear as white, which makes it easier for abnormalities to be hidden ro missed.

Second, dense breast tissue is a risk factor for breast cancer. Women who have extremely dense breasts may be at a higher risk than women with mostly fatty breasts.

If it’s determined that you have dense breasts, your doctor may recommend additional screening, such as an ultrasound or MRI.

While dense breast tissue isn’t dangerous, it can complicate cancer detection and slightly increase your risk.

The best thing you can do to protect your health is to undergo regular screenings, especially if you’re over the age of 40 or have an increased risk.
